Plastic Water Bottles to Be Banned in San Francisco Airport
According to the Guardian, San Francisco Airport (SFO) has implemented a new policy of "no plastic bottles" since July, when disposable plastic pipes were banned. Convenient stores, restaurants and vending machines can only sell recyclable glass, aluminum or certified decomposable plastic bottled water. In fact, this policy is part of the SFO's five-year strategic plan, as well as becoming the world's first "no garbage airport" by 2021.

In response to environmental protection, SFO has banned the sale or supply of bottled water in plastic bottles from the 20th of this month, regardless of vending machines or shops. According to US media reports, the ban will apply to all areas of the airport, including shops, restaurants, cafes and vending machines, where plastic bottled water is not allowed to be sold or provided free of charge, but not on airplanes.
According to the airport, suppliers will be able to sell or provide reusable recyclable canned, glass canned and biodegradable canned water to replace plastic bottled water.
The ban's definition of plastic bottles covers sealed boxes, bags, cans, bottles and other disposable containers with a capacity of less than one liter, whether they contain pure water, mineral water, carbonated water or electrolytic water. But drinks such as soda, iced tea, coffee, and fruit juice are not prohibited.
Visitors can bring their own empty disposable plastic water bottles or other water bottles to supplement water. San Francisco Airport has more than 100 water dispensers, and there will be additional ones in the future. However, considering Airport safety, passengers are still prohibited from carrying full water bottles outside the airport. If passengers don't bring their own water bottles, they can buy reusable aluminum bottles at the airport.
The ban comes from the San Francisco City Act of 2014, which prohibits the sale of plastic water bottles on Municipal properties. This regulation has not been implemented at airports until now. It is also the latest phase of a broader plan at San Francisco Airport to reduce airport carbon emissions and energy use to zero by 2021, excluding aircraft-related emissions and energy consumption.
San Francisco Airport spokesman Doug Yakel said: "We are the first airport to implement this adjustment independently. We are the pioneer in the aviation industry, hoping to break through the boundaries of sustainable development. At present, suppliers of San Francisco Airport sell about 4 million bottles of plastic water every year.
